Breeding Stock

The Dorper is a South African breed of domestic sheep developed by crossing Dorset Horn and the Blackhead Persian sheep. The Dorper is a fast-growing meat-producing sheep. The Dorper is an easy-care animal that produces a short, light coat of wool and hair that is shed in late spring and summer. At Kettle Crest Farm we seasonally have breeding stock that meets or exceeds the performance criteria we require to sell as breeding stock.

The Southdown was developed in Sussex, England in the late 1700's. In Canada it became known as the “Aberdeen Angus” of the sheep industry due to its ability to produce a meaty carcasses for the medium and light lamb markets while maintaining feed conversion efficiency. The Southdown is docile and adapts very well to confinement. Its size and quiet nature make the Southdown an excellent breed for starter flocks or 4-H projects for children. The ewes are generally maintained as purebreds. Southdown rams are widely used as terminal sires to put finish on crossbred lambs from other breeds. The Southdown does possess the ability to finish on pasture. At Kettle Crest Farm we do offer purebred breeding stock for sale, when seasonally available.

Crossbred Sheep

Our crossbred sheep are weighted to Dorper, Southdown and Rideau Arcott crossed sheep. We do offer the crossbred ewe lambs for sale that exhibit the traits on the GenOvis performance testing program that will provide you quality stock for your sheep flock.
